The insidious creep of abuse

They were married for less than a year when the sly digs started.

"You've put on a bit of weight," he'd tell her.

"You might have to join a gym.

"That dress doesn't suit you.

"You've let yourself go."

In the beginning, Al claimed his mood wasn't always Laura's fault because his job was stressing him out, causing these little outbursts. Laura didn't like the way her husband treated her but it was best not to make a fuss, especially around friends or family.
