He pauses for a moment when he mentions the length of his sentence and then enquires awkwardly, "do I mention my crime?" It's up to him, I offer.
"Manslaughter. I was the cause of somebody's death."
The conversation shifts with this revelation. Strangely, his hands become more prominent. His speech alters, almost stutters to a halt. His body language betrays a sad mix of shame and regret. I later find out the details of his crime, which are horrific.
I suggest obliquely that his prison sentence must give him a lot of time to think.
